Select Cancer Fighting Foods to Strengthen Your Body

Eating only cancer fighting foods will boost your immune system and help your body heal itself. You are what you eat, and when you are fighting cancer, what you put into your body becomes so much more important.

The National Cancer Institute has estimated that approximately one-third of cancer related deaths may have been prevented with a proper diet.

Which Foods Prevent Cancer?

There are many foods that contain proven cancer fighting characteristics, such as antioxidants to neutralize free radicals, and powerful phytochemicals.

Avocados – Avocados have high levels of glutathione, which is a powerful antioxidant known to attack free radicals by blocking the absorption of certain fats in the intestine. They are also a good source of beta-carotene, and provide more potassium than bananas. Scientists have found avocados may be helpful in certain types of liver damage, as well as viral hepatitis (which causes liver cancer).

Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage – These vegetables contain a chemical component known as indole-3-carbinol, which has the ability to fight breast cancer by converting the estrogen associated with promoting cancer into a healthier form. Broccoli sprouts also contain phytochemical sulforaphane, which is believed to help prevent some types of cancer, such as rectal and colon cancer.

Carrots are excellent cancer fighting food

Carrots – Carrots are great cancer fighting foods, very high in beta carotene, which is believed to help fight many types of cancer, including throat, mouth, lung, intestine, stomach, breast, prostate, and bladder. Carrots are more beneficial when eaten raw than when cooked.

Chili peppers and jalapenos – Hot peppers contain a chemical called capsaicin, which is believed to neutralize certain substances known to cause cancer, such as nitrosamines, and may be be helpful in the treatment and prevention of stomach cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables – Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower contain the antioxidants zeaxanthin and lutein, which may decrease the size of tumors in prostate and some other types of cancer.

Figs – Scientists have found figs contain a type of benzaldehyde, which is a chemical that has been very effective in shrinking tumors. They also contain vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, calcium and magnesium, which are natural appetite suppressors and may aid in weight-loss efforts.

Flax – Flax seed and flax seed oil contain lignans, which are believed to block or suppress changes in cancerous cells. Flax also contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which fight colon cancer and heart disease.

Garlic – Garlic has an immune boosting allium compound (dialyl sultides) that strengthens the immune system and makes it better equipped to fight off cancer-causing substances in the body. It has also been shown to stop carcinogens from entering cancer cells and slowing down tumor development. Studies have shown that garlic, leeks, onions and chives lower the risk of developing stomach and colon cancer.

Grapefruit – Some oncologists say to stay away from citrus fruits, however several studies show the monoterpenes found in citrus fruits may actually cleanse the body of carcinogens. Grapefruit also contains known cancer fighters beta-carotene, vitamin C and folic acid.

Papayas – Papayas are high in vitamin C that acts as an antioxidant and has also been shown to reduce absorption of nitrosamines. It also contains folic acid.


Raspberries – Raspberries are full of vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants that help fight cancer cells. Studies have shown that black raspberries are helpful in fighting colon cancer and are higher in antioxidants, and are more effective cancer fighting foods than strawberries or blueberries.

Tomatoes – Tomatoes are high in lycopene, which is an antioxidant that attacks free radicals. Studies suggest tomatoes grown in hotter weather produce more lycopene. They are also a good source of vitamin C. Red peppers, carrots and watermelons also contain lycopene and vitamin C, but in lesser quantities. An increase in the amount of lycopene consumed has been linked to reducing the risk of breast, pancreas, prostate and colorectal cancer. Studies show that a little oil sprinkled on the tomato or blended into the juice helps the body absorb the lycopene better.

Tea – Green Tea and Black Tea are high in antioxidants that prevent cancer cells from dividing and spreading. Green tea is the best, and the more common black tea ranks second. Herbal teas have not shown any cancer-fighting benefits.

Most fruits and vegetables are cancer fighting foods. Except for carrots, which have a limit to how much you can eat or drink per day, the more fruits and vegetables and green tea you consume, the better chance you have of fighting cancer.
