Alternative Cancer Treatments Explored

Every year the number of people seeking alternative cancer treatments rises significantly. There are many options available to those looking for help outside the sphere of allopathic medicine.

Mainstream cancer treatments are often harsh and difficult to cope with for an already compromised immune system. Chemotherapy and radiation, while usually effective in eradicating cancer cells (at least temporarily), also kill healthy cells.

Surgical removal, another of the preferred cancer treatment methods used by contemporary oncologists, is invasive and carries all of the risks associated with any surgery.

Often after any of these procedures, cancer cells are left behind in the body and begin to multiply and spread again shortly after treatment.

Alternative Therapies

Bioelectric Therapy - also called Eclectro-Cancer Therapy - involves the use of tightly controlled electrical currents. Typically, wires are attached at or near the tumor site and applied as deemed necessary by the practitioner. Proponents of bioelectric therapy say that the the treatment is preferable over traditional approaches because of the way that cancer cells can be targeted, while leaving healthy cells intact and relatively undisturbed.

Patients are also left free from any visible scarring as a result of bioelectric therapy. This type of treatment is administered using local anesthesia, eliminating the risks associated with being put under with general anesthesia.

Wheatgrass therapy - Wheatgrass is considered by many to be a “superfood.” A powerhouse of nutrients and vitamins, wheatgrass juice therapy holds a lofty place among popular alternative cancer treatments. Wheatgrass contains high amounts of chlorophyll, as well as a plethora of vitamins, antioxidants, hormones, enzymes, and every single necessary amino acid.

Wheatgrass is believed to help the body in releasing toxins and thereby purifying the bloodstream, as well as increasing oxygen delivery to individual cells. Many experts believe that lack of oxygen is a key factor in what makes a cell turn cancerous.

Essiac Tea - There are many pre-blended herbal formulas available as alternative cancer treatments. One that has seen consistent popularity is the Essiac blend. The name comes from Rene Caisse, who first introduced the formula to the public (Essiac is Caisse spelled backward).

Usually packaged as tea, Essiac contains sheep sorrel, slippery elm, kelp, turkish rhubarb, and burdock root. Each of these herbs has blood purifying properties believed to help the body rid itself of cancerous cells.

Mistletoe is used as one of several alternative cancer treatments

Mistletoe - Mistletoe has been used in many areas of the world to inhibit tumor growth and to bolster the immune system. Mistletoe extract is usually administered by injection, typically near the site of the tumor or cluster of tumors. The amount used and frequency of application will vary depending on the individual patient, to be determined by factors such as age, weight, medical history, and type of cancer.

Saw Palmetto - Saw Palmetto is another popular herbal cancer therapy, particularly for use on prostate cancer patients. Its berries are dried and ingested in the form of tea or in capsules. Saw Palmetto treatment has been shown to shrink enlarged prostates and decrease inflammation.

Birch - Extracts from parts of the Birch tree have been used by many different cultures around the world to treat several diseases and conditions for hundreds - if not thousands - of years. More recently, researchers have isolated a compound found within the Birch’s bark - betulinic acid - which has been shown to be incredibly effective in treating melanoma.

Pau d'arco - Pau d'arco, like many herbal alternative cancer treatments, can be used by itself as well as in conjunction with conventional methods. The plant is native to South America, where it has been used by indigenous people for generations to treat a wide variety of health problems. This complex herb possesses important compounds that are said to halt the progression of cancer cell growth, and even cause remission.

Chaparral - Chaparral grows in North American desert regions, and was a staple medicinal herb for the native tribes of those areas. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is packed with antioxidants, which many attribute to its success in treating cancer in some patients.

Aloe is a gentle alternative treatment

Aloe - Aloe Vera is another plant that has many medicinal purposes that have been recognized by various cultures around the world. The aloe plant carries within it a substance called acemannan, which has recently been touted as having antiviral properties as well as being a powerful immune booster. When used as part of alternative cancer treatments, aloe is usually taken internally - most often in juice form.

Visualization - Many schools of thought hold that, in order to successfully heal from cancer (or any disease), one must intentionally harness the power of the mind in order to reprogram the body. Some alternative medical practitioners lead patients in guided visualizations, during which they envision the healing process taking place inside their bodies.

Studies have shown that this practice can not only alleviate pain and anxiety, but that it has a profound effect on the immune system. This mind-over-matter approach is sometimes used as a complement to mainstream methods.

Metabolic therapy - This combination-style treatment focuses on removing toxins from the body. The buildup of toxic substances in the bloodstream, practitioners believe, is often the cause of cellular malfunctions like cancer. Treatment involves using vitamins, dietary changes, enzyme-based supplements, and sometimes includes other methods aimed at purifying blood and restoring the body’s natural disease-fighting capacity.

Laetrile - One of the most sought-after alternative cancer treatments is laetrile, which is believed by many to shrink the size of cancerous tumors. Laetrile is derived from amygdalin, a compound that is extracted from the pits of certain nuts and fruits (most commonly apricots and almonds). The United States government has created a partially synthesized version of the substance, patented as Laetrile (note the capital “L”). This is to keep it from being confused with the naturally occurring form.

Laetrile is administered orally, through injections, or a combination of both. Since amygdalin contains concentrations of cyanide, patients should be monitored carefully for symptoms of poisoning from overdose.

There are many alternative cancer treatments available that seem to have significant effects on tumors and cancer cells. Most can be used in conjunction with other treatments, and finding the most ideal kind of therapy will depend on the type of cancer, as well as the level of advancement, and of course the patient’s level of comfort with any curative plan.
